Marek the Tory?

Wrecsam's Ramada Hotel is playing host to a Tory party press conference this morning at which Nick Bourne (Welsh Tory Assembly leader) and Cheryl Gillan (Tory shadow Welsh Secretary) will apparently unveil their latest recruit.
Word on the streets* is that the Tories are about to welcome on board John Marek, a man who stood against Labour and won in 2003 on a left-wing ticket. Back then he argued that Labour had betrayed its roots and met Tommy Sheridan's Scottish Socialist Party to discuss policies. With Ron Davies he formed Forward Wales, a left party calling for a full parliament for Wales.
Given the promises made to Mohammed Asghar when he defected to the Tories last year - a prime position on the regional list plus the employment of his daughter - one wonders what the Tories are offering Marek?
A pop at his former colleague Lesley Griffiths for the Assembly seat next year seems the most obvious, but will the Tories locally be able to back this former left-winger?
Perhaps Bourne might like to ponder what he is creating with his extravagant promises to maverick defectors.

* Word on the streets last night was of another maverick politician close to Marek. But, as they say, a week is a long time in politics.

Seen Nick Ramsay and Cheryl Gillam, apparently John Marek hidden away in a side room. Some Tories unhappy with the idea of Marek joining them.

So there we have it confirmed Marek the Tory...what next?

To quote from Marek's statement:

New Labour has lost all purpose and authority – facts clearly demonstrated in the sight last week of former ministers seemingly more worried about lining their own pockets than serving the people who elected them.

Now exactly how much money did Dr Marek make from politics, rumour has it that he's a millionaire! We know that he gave half a million to Wrexham FC so that is probably right. Accusing others of lining their pockets is akin to the pot calling the kettle black.

Hear that the Conservatives was a second choice, Marek having been turned down by the Lib Dems.

Facebook comment of the day: Mohammed Asghar is delighted to welcome John Marek into the Welsh Conservative Party.

With those two on board, how long before the Welsh Tories implode?

Perhaps the Tories will want to know about their new found friend and his very close relationship with militant trade unionists and socialists.
He can call up Bob Crow and ask him nicely to call off the strikes. After all, he's still an RMT member.

A prominent RMT member denied to me today that Marek and Bob Crow are mates!

Anyone notice how low down on the Welsh News this story was today. Probably because Marek was yesterday's man and he has no significance for the future of Welsh politics.

Did the Tories check on John Marek's dodgy links with past and present football club rip-off merchants - run Marek run!

Cracking video that. He didn't 'give' the club £500,000, he leant Geoffrey Moss £250k at 6% pa then lied to the wrexham supporters by saying he wasn't charging interest. This is after he jumped into bed with fat asset-stripping crook Mark Simon Guterman long after he had been exposed as a fat asset-stripping crook. Mmm, yeah, this is Mark yeah, call me yeah. I'd call you but they've cut my phone off yeah. Can you lend me a tenner yeah?

Never mind Plaid or Labour, if Marek runs for office again then it will be the mighty supporters of the Town who will ruin his campaign. The Tories have really dropped a bollock here.

Bob Crow is no admirer of Marek, and I'm fairly sure his association with the RMT won't last much longer.

Didn't Bob bankroll his last election campaign

Proper Tidy,

Guterman and Hamilton in court today, DTI trying to stop them being company directors. Story in Daily Post, wonder if Marek will be giving them character references?

"Didn't Bob bankroll his last election campaign"

Apparently so, don't think he'll be doing it again, I wonder what rank and file RMT members think of how their money has been spent?
