Our Allies!

On the 12th March 2012, PPP a polling company carried out a survey of identified Republican supporters in Alabama and Mississippi, the results are frankly worrying. The following illustrate the point:

1. Do you think Barack Obama is a Christian, Muslim, or are not sure?

Christian 14%
Muslim 45%
Not sure 41%

2. Do you believe in evolution or not?

Believe in evolution 26%
Do not believe 60%
Not sure 13%

3. Do you think interracial marriages should be legal or illegal?

Legal 67%
Illegal 21%
Not sure 12%

These values are not our values so tell me why are we going to war with these, our so called allies?

Strange answer to Q3 bearing in mind the answers to the previous two.

I don't think so, the third question is overtly a question about race even Deep South white are reluctant to overtly declare racist tendencies 20%+ is still a lot; if the question had been more subtle there would have been more.

It needs to be put into perspective though. Most black and progressive voters in these states are democrat. This is a poll of republican voters. It should also be noted that the electoral collage of Mississippi is 6 and Alabama 9. This compares with California 55, New York 31, even little old Massatusus is 12. Even the largest 'republican' state, Texas is 34, which although 'right wing' is considered progressive compared with Mississippi and Alabama. The delta states are considered a joke, and it would be a bit like extrapolating the values of BNP voters in Dagenham as an indication of political will in the whole of England. It's worrying, but hardly significant.

Alabama has a population of just under 5 million. They vote Republican 70/30 in General Election. All State officials are Republican and they hold both State houses. The 2 Senators are Republican and 5 of the 7 Congressional representative. Mississippi, Georgia and South Carolina and Louisiana are similar. Texas with Rick Perry is not as moderate as you think. These Southern States were Democrat until LBJ's Presidency and passage of the 64 Civil Rights Act and the 65 Voting Rights Act. LBJ said at the time that the South was lost to the Democrats for a generation. In fact the South seems lost to the Democrats for ever.

Last night Rick Santorum the right wing evangelical Christian won the Republican nomination race in Alabama and Mississippi.

for a country so intent on destroying the muslim taliban, it's ironic that they are developing one of their very own. Albeit a christian one. Anti gay, anti women, anti contraception, anti sex education, anti evolution, no healthcare for those who don't follow the boss's strict religeous code.. They'll be burning geology books and stoning hippies next. No wonder obama's looking so happy these days, can't believe these far right zealot loons will make much impact, I can see the moderate republicans streaming to the democrats.

You're absolutely right, particularly the registered Independents will flood to Obama. If things carry on as they are the margin of victory may be as large as what LBJ had over Barry Goldwater in 1964.
